CHAPTER 17

FINDING ZOMBIE-TOWN

The group moved quietly through the woods, approaching the large opening in the sheer cliff wall. They had been hearing zombies everywhere through these woods; the thick leafy canopy overhead provided enough shade for the monsters to be out during the day without bursting into flames. But as they approached the extreme hills ahead, Gameknight999 could hear even more of the monsters moaning from within a large cave dug into the hill. He knew that when the sun set, this forest would be alive with monsters. They had to find Monet before that happened. The problem was that they had to go into the cave in order to find his sister.

Gameknight moved to the edge of the opening, and glanced into its depths. He couldn’t see anything, just shadows and darkness.

“We have to go in,” he whispered to Crafter. “Are you sure that this leads to their village?”

“These two woodcutters followed them, isn’t that right?” Crafter said.

Two NPCs that had accompanied them both nodded their heads. These two were both woodcutters, so they had the same name, Woodcutter, which was confusing for Gameknight at times, though somehow the NPCs always seemed to know who was who. They both wore the traditional garb of a woodcutter, red smock with a brown stripe down the center. Out in the open, in bright sunlight, they made an attractive target for skeletons; and a few had tried their archery skills from the shadows as they traveled to this cave, but Hunter had quickly silenced their bows with her own. The Woodcutters reminded Gameknight of the old Star Trek episodes when Captain Kirk would go to some alien planet. The red-shirted security guards never fared well on these adventures. He hoped these Woodcutters wouldn’t meet the same fate.

“OK, let’s go in,” Gameknight said, then darted into the cave.

Extending all of his senses out into the shadows, he moved cautiously through the cave, looking behind blocks and inside holes for clawed surprises . . . so far they saw none.

“Come on,” the User-that-is-not-a-user said.

Gripping his sword firmly, he moved through the tunnel, his friends following behind in a single-file line. His enchanted sword cast an iridescent blue glow on the stone walls, adding some light to the darkness, but still it was difficult to see far ahead. Gameknight knew that Hunter was right behind him, her arrows hungry for monster-flesh. He was still shocked at the raw anger she still felt toward the monsters. They had taken her family and friends from her, but her anger was more than that. It was to the point of being an irrational obsession, as if she wanted the monsters dead because they were just different from NPCs. Gameknight thought that she might kill any monster just for being alive, their difference enough excuse to exterminate them. It worried him. Killing should be hard; it should come about after much consideration and be needed to protect your own life. But with Hunter, it seemed that she wanted the monsters dead because they were monsters, and no other reason.
